The History Of Craps
Craps have been closely related with the ancient game of Hazard. Some even claim that craps is a descendant of the ancient game Hazard.
Hazard is claimed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre and his knights. It was said that this was the past time of the crusaders while they were laying siege to a castle. The name Hazard was used because it was associated with the takeover of the castle. There are some that say the word came from the Arabic word “al zar” or azzah meaning dice.
No one was quite certain who invented the game. What was for certain was that it became a popular game throughout the ages and even mentioned in the Canterbury Tales. It was even said that noblemen and people of luxury lost properties because of this game.
The French eventually learned of this game and changed it to Craps. The name of craps came from the game of hazard itself, because in Hazard, a losing throw of 2 is called crabs.
Some say that the French took it to America. Some even say that it was the British settlers that arrived in America from the Mayflower.
The game was eventually simplified when it was taken into America. It was then turned and more formerly known as the game of Craps. The Hazard game that the French brought with them moved further south into a game known as Cajuns. Some also believe that the name Johnny Crapaud given to the French was the source. This is because in French, crap meant people who loved eating amphibians.
The game of Craps on the southern part of America was said to be attributed to African Americans during the early 19th century. This is because the slang name of craps is also known as African Dominoes.
It has been established now that the name craps was really from losing a throw of 2 in the game of Hazards.
The game spread on via the route of the Mississippi River to the rest of the United States. Eventually a dice creator named John Winn improved the game more. The players were then asked to bet with the shooter or against him.
This practice negated the use of crooked dice which was a common practice at that time. That’s why John H. Winn became known as the father of modern day craps.
Today Craps has become the biggest gambling game throughout the entire world in terms of the money wagered.
